The pattern of School / Junior rowing has changed greatly since the L.R.G.S.B.C. was established in 1948. The school rowing season now stretches from September to July each year. Between October and March the emphasis is on winter training and competition is in the form of Head Races. These are time-trial events in which crews race, in procession, over a fixed distance . The distances raced are generally longer than in the regatta season and races can last between ten and twenty minutes depending on the venue. Most Head Races attended by the club take place within the North West at locations such as Runcorn, York and Chester although trips to Nottingham and London are not uncommon. The regatta season for L.R.G.S.B.C. starts in late April and extends through to the middle of July. Local regattas tend to be two-lane knock-out competitions but the major national events are six-lanes and often use a system of heats and repecharges.
